Updated: Ten Wonders of 2019 Presidential Election in Nigeria


So far, today's presidential election, in particular, can be said to be intriguing despite some reported clashes here and there.

 Nigerians are left in the realm of surprises as the results trickle in from across Nigeria.

As it stands right now, the following are the top 10 surprises in the ongoing 2019 election from our perspectives:

  1. President Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressive Congress defeating Alhaji Atiku Abubakar of the People Democratic Party in Atiku's polling unit by 187 votes to 167 votes.
  2. President Buhari losing his polling unit in the Senatorial election to PDP Senatorial candidate.
  3. The People Democratic Party (PDP) won at polling unit–code 33, unit 2, Victoria Garden City, Lagos, where Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo voted. The PDP won the three elections held at the unit. For the presidential election, the PDP polled 425 votes while the APC had 229 while for the senatorial election, the PDP had 414 votes while the APC had 261.
  4.  Former President Olusegun Obasanjo failure to win his polling unit for Atiku leaving Buhari to win it.
  5. Atiku defeating Buhari in Pu 002 polling unit in Aso Rock by 525 votes to 465 votes.
  6. A governorship aspirant of the All Progressive Congress in Lagos, Sanawo-Olu losing polling unit to Atiku by 52 votes to 48. While the governorship aspirant of PDP in Lagos, Jimi Agbaje lost his polling unit to the APC by 83 votes to 80 votes. 
  7. Former Governor of Kano State and a presidential aspirant in the primary of the PDP, Rabiu Kwankwaso could not win his local government for Atiku as Buhari won it with 26, 110 votes while Atiku got only 13, 113 votes.
  8. Incumbent Governor of Gombe state (PDP) failure to caption his polling unit as Buhari defeated Atiku there by 453 votes to 80.
  9. Bukola Saraki (PDP) losing his senatorial seat to his main opposition, Ibrahim Oloriegbe of the APC despite winning his polling unit for himself and for Atiku.
  10. Former Governor of Cross River State and the presidential candidate of Social Democratic Party, Donald Duke losing his polling unit to Atiku by 6 votes to 98 while Buhari settled with 98 votes.

Add_ons: 

1. Senator Dino Melaye retained his seat despite his court battles with the Federal Government and the political battles between him and his state government.

2. Incumbent governor of Oyo State, Abiola Ajimobi (APC) lost to Wole Akinsola of the PDP in the Senatorial election of Oyo South Senatorial district.


3. Akpabio Loses Senatorial Seat In Akwa Ibom to Stephen Ekpenyong of PDP 118, 215 votes to 83, 158.
