2020 Grammy: Burna Boy Loses to Angelique Kidjo

Nigerian musician Burna Boy could not win the Best World Music Album category at the 62nd Grammy Awards. He lost the prestigious award to the iconic Benin Republic singer Angelique Kidjo.

Burna Boy's album "Africa Giant" was nominated for the category in November 2019 giving Nigerians high hopes that the singer will bring home the Grammy for the first time since 2009 when Sikiru Adepoju and his group won it.

However, Angelique Kidjo's album Celia was too good for the Grammy Academy to ignore. Hence, she beat other musicians in the category to emerge the winner.

With his 2020 nomination, Burna Boy joins the likes of Seun Kuti, Femi Kuti and King Sunny Ade in getting listed in that category at the Grammy Awards.

Other Nigerian Grammy nominees include Babatunde Olatunji, Wizkid, Timaya and Kah Lo.

Sikiru Adepoju remained the only Nigerian to have won the Grammy Awards twice - 1991 and 2009. However, numerous singer with Nigerian roots like Sade Audu, Seal, Chamillionaire and a couple of others have won it in the past.
