Tottenham signs Gedson Fernandes

Tottenham has signed Gedson Fernandes on an 18-month loan from Benfica. The deal comes with an option to buy the 21-year-old  Portuguese midfielder for £42.76m (€50m).

Tottenham and West Ham showed interest in the lad but Fernande decided to sign for Spurs instead, managed by fellow Portuguese Jose Mourinho.

Chelsea had initially offered a loan deal with an obligation to buy Fernandes for £55m should he play at least 50 percent of games over the 18-month period, while West Ham also made a similar offer with an option to buy for £33m, with a lower percentage of appearances triggering the purchase.

Lyon and AC Milan also made formal offers but Fernandes' preferred choice was a move to the Premier League.

Tottenham are keen to bolster their midfield following an injury to a host of their midfielders including Moussa Sissoko, who has been sidelined for three months after undergoing surgery to the medial collateral ligament in his right knee.

Fernandes has two caps for Portugal, and he has made 53 appearances in all competitions for Benfica, with three goals to his credit. He will wear the No 30 shirt for Spurs.
