Update on Balogun Fire: the Man who Reportedly caused the Outbreak is Dead [Videos]


Today, January 29, 2020, fire visited the popular Balogun market on Victoria Island, Lagos for the second time in less than three months.

The fire started from a building opposite Oluwole Car Park on Martins Street Anambra plaza (Balogun Market, Victoria Island, Lagos).

The fire engulfed some major high rise buildings and plazas including Aloy plaza, Anambra plaza, and Sunnyland plaza.

 A  Senior Special Assistant to the Lagos State Governor on New Media, Jubril Gawat disclosed that the fire outbreak was caused by a trader fuelling an electric generator while the generator was still running.

The fire outbreak has reportedly killed the trader and destroyed over seven adjoining buildings stock with goods worth billions of Naira. Besides that, it has left the traders unsettled as at the point of publishing this report.

 “This fire has escalated to adjoining buildings totalling 7 in number and now is being contained by the Emergency responders-Lagos State Fire Service and the Federal Fire Service and NPA Fire Service. Seven buildings are affected and one has collapsed. All responders are on ground and progress is being made. We urge for calm and will provide further updates,” The Director-General of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Femi Oke-Osanyintolu said.

As at 6:30 pm today, the firefighters were still battling to conquer the raging inferno which started in the early hours of the day.



Recall that a shopping complex at the market was gutted by fire on the 5th of November, 2019. On that same date, Dosunmu area and a Chin Chin factory in Lagos also experienced fire outbreaks.

Also, recall that a fire outbreak occurred in a timber market in the Mushin area of Lagos. While a pipeline explosion was recently reported in Ile Epo area of Lagos State killing scores of people and destroying properties worth millions of Naira.
