COVID-19: How Much is China Owing the World?

There is a conception that the dreaded COVID-19 pandemic was a product of a laboratory in Wuhan, China, where the pandemic started between November and December 2019. The conception which started like what one can easily describe as 'fake news' is gradually and strongly gaining the attention of World powers - France, Germany, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America.

Governments of the countries mentioned above have been quoted in press briefings insisting that the government of the people of China is not telling the world the exact truth as far as the pandemic is concerned. Recently, the Prime Minister of Germany Angela Merkel urged China to tell the world the origin of the virus.

President Donald Trump of the United States also had to cut off spending to the World Health Organization (WHO) which has been insisting that the pandemic has nothing to do with Labs in China.

In the same defense, the spokesperson of the Chinese foreign ministry Zhao Lijian, said on Thursday, April 16, that just like the conclusion of the WHO, the coronavirus was not created in a laboratory in China.

Yet, a German popular newspaper Bild decided to help the government of Germany to calculate the level of damages the outbreak of the pandemic has caused the country.

In the publication, the newspaper wrote that the Chinese government should pay the German government  £130 billion, which is equivalent to N62 trillion as damages for what COVID-19 has caused in Germany.

In the breakdown of the damages, the newspaper is urging China to pay €27 billion for lost tourism revenue, €7.2 billion for the German film industry, a million euros an hour for German airline Lufthansa and €50 billion for German small businesses. It added that this amounts to €1,784 (£1,550) per person if Germany's GDP falls by 4.2%.

Hence, if truly China created this virus or intentionally spread it as it is being speculated, the question would be, how much damages can China pay for such war against the world and humanity?

As of April 19, 2020, the world has recorded 2, 241 359 confirmed cases while 152,551 people had died due to the virus according to WHO.

So, if China has to pay for the damages of all the lives that have been lost due to the virus, how much can the country afford to pay per soul or will the souls be regarded as mere casualties of an experiment gone bad?

What about the companies, the business owners, the wasted time of the students who couldn't afford online classes, and those who depend on daily incomes but couldn't continue with their work because they have to obey the lockdown order of their governments?

What about those who died of starvation, fear, frustration, or bitterness of losing a loved one during the pandemic? How much damages can China pay?

What about the health workers who have been risking their lives and that of their families to save other lives? How much can China pay for their sweat, stress, and fears?

What about economies of countries that have completely gone dead due to the pandemic and which economy might not pick up on time after the pandemic?

So many questions, but the first question China must answer is "what happened?" If China fails to answer this question appropriately, then, the pandemic will leave the world more divided and ready for war more than how it met it.
